History of Hearts
Hearts is a classic trick-taking card game that has been enjoyed for generations. It originated in Spain in the 1700s as "Reversis" before evolving into the game we know today.
The game gained widespread popularity in the United States during the 1990s when Microsoft included it as part of the Windows operating system, introducing millions of people to this engaging card game.
Today, Hearts continues to be a favorite pastime for card game enthusiasts around the world, appreciated for its perfect balance of simplicity and strategic depth.
How to Play
Basic Rules
- Hearts is played with a standard 52-card deck.
- The goal is to have the lowest score at the end of the game.
- Each heart card is worth 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.
- Players must follow suit if possible.
- The player with the 2 of Clubs leads the first trick.
- Hearts cannot be led until they have been "broken" (played in a previous trick).
Special Rules
- Shooting the Moon: If a player takes all hearts and the Queen of Spades, they can choose to either subtract 26 points from their score or add 26 points to all other players.
- Card Passing: At the beginning of each hand, players pass three cards to another player. The direction of passing rotates each round.
- First Trick: No point cards (hearts or the Queen of Spades) can be played on the first trick unless the player has no other option.
Tips for Enjoying Hearts
When passing cards, consider getting rid of high cards like the Ace and King of Spades to avoid taking the Queen of Spades. Also, pass away high hearts if you have them.
Being in control of when hearts are first played (breaking hearts) can give you a significant advantage. Try to maintain control of the lead when possible.
Pay attention to which cards have been played and what your opponents might be holding. This information becomes increasingly valuable as the hand progresses.
Perfect for Leisure Time
Hearts is the ideal game for those moments when you need a break. Whether you're waiting for an appointment, relaxing after work, or just looking for a mental challenge, Hearts offers the perfect balance of engagement and relaxation.
