Hitori: The Zen Art of Logical Elimination

Addition by Subtraction

In most puzzles, the goal is to find what’s missing. In Hitori (the Japanese word for “alone” or “one person”), the goal is to find what is redundant. It is the perfect antithesis to Sudoku. You start with a grid full of numbers and must selectively “black out” cells until the rules are satisfied. It’s a game of visual filtering and spatial logic.

The Triple Constraints of Hitori:

  1. Unique Rows & Columns: No unshaded number can appear more than once in any row or column.
  2. No Shaded Neighbors: Shaded (black) cells cannot touch horizontally or vertically. They can only touch diagonally.
  3. The White Stream: All unshaded (white) cells must form a single continuous area. They cannot be split into islands by the black cells.

Beginner Strategies:

  • The Sandwich Rule: If you see a sequence like 5 2 5 in a row, the outer 5s are likely targets for elimination, but you must be careful not to create a black-cell wall.
  • Corner Traps: If shading a cell would isolate a corner white cell, then that shaded cell must remain white.
  • The Triple Threat: If three identical numbers are adjacent (e.g., 8 8 8), the ones on the ends can often be determined by the middle one’s status.

Why Play Hitori?

hitori is excellent for developing “negative space” thinking. It forces your brain to look not just at what is there, but at what becomes of the grid as you remove components. It’s a meditative yet rigorous mental workout.
