Kurodoko: Mastering the Line of Sight in Logic

The Geometry of Vision

Kurodoko (Where are the black cells?) is a fascinating Japanese puzzle that challenges your spatial awareness. Every number in the grid represents the total number of white cells “visible” from that position in four directions (horizontal and vertical), including the cell itself. Your job is to place black cells strategically to block sightlines and satisfy every number’s requirement.

The Fundamental Laws of Kurodoko:

  1. The Vision Rule: Numbers always reside in white cells. The count of all continuous white cells in its row and column (until a black cell or the edge is hit) must equal that number.
  2. Isolation is Forbidden: Black cells cannot touch each other horizontally or vertically (diagonal contact is permitted).
  3. Universal Connectivity: Every single white cell must be connected to every other white cell through an unbroken path. No “white islands” allowed!

Deduction Strategies:

  • Edge cases: A number 2 in a corner is a gift. It means its immediate neighbors are likely black, or the path is very restricted.
  • Reach Analysis: If a number is 9 on a small board, its “arms” must reach almost to the edges. Any cell outside that potential reach is a candidate for a black blocker.

Mental Benefits

Kurodoko forces you to think about the grid as a whole. You can’t just solve one number in isolation; you must ensure the entire “forest” of white cells remains navigable. It’s a superb exercise in long-term planning and spatial deduction.
