When you receive a job offer, the number discussed is almost always your Gross Pay. However, the amount you see on your payday notification is your Net Pay. Understanding the difference is crucial for personal budgeting.
What is Gross Pay?
Gross pay is the total amount of money you earn before any deductions are subtracted. This includes:
- Base Salary
- Bonuses
- Overtime Pay
- Commissions
What is Net Pay?
Net pay, often called "take-home pay," is what remains after all mandatory and voluntary deductions.
Formula: Net Pay = Gross Pay - (Taxes + Benefits + Other Deductions)
Common Deductions
1. Income Tax
Governments levy tax on your income. The rate usually depends on your income bracket and marital status.
2. Social Security / National Pension
Contributions towards national retirement schemes. In many countries, this is matched by the employer.
3. Health Insurance
Premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance are often deducted pre-tax.
Why It Matters
When negotiating a salary, always estimate your Net Pay. A high Gross Salary might result in a lower-than-expected take-home amount if you move to a region with higher taxes.
