BMI vs. Body Fat Percentage

The Problem with BMI

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple calculation based on height and weight. It works for the general population but fails for individuals.

  • Muscle vs. Fat: Muscle is denser than fat. A bodybuilder might have a "Obese" BMI despite having low body fat.
  • Skinny Fat: Someone with normal weight but low muscle mass might have a healthy BMI but unhealthy visceral fat levels.

Enter Body Fat Percentage

Body fat percentage measures exactly what it says: the percent of your weight that is fat.

  • Men: 10-20% is generally healthy / athletic.
  • Women: 18-28% is generally healthy / athletic.

Which should you use?

Use BMI for a quick general check. Use Body Fat Percentage (via calipers, DEXA scan, or smart scales) for tracking fitness progress and true health.
