Understanding Depression
What is Depression?
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
Common Symptoms
- Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
- Decreased energy, fatigue, feeling "slowed down"
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping)
When to Get Help
If you have been experiencing some of the above symptoms for more than two weeks, it may be time to talk to a healthcare professional. Depression is treatable, and the earlier you seek help, the more effective treatment can be.
